Ms. Faria's Kindergarten class recently planted their Sunflower seedlings. These plants were started by the students in the classroom as part of their Science curriculum. We are fortunate that they will be adorning the West School grounds.
The mission of the West Elementary School, a diverse school community, is to provide a safe, nurturing environment of mutual respect; inspiring all children to achieve their academic potential as life-long learners while assuring appropriate social emotional development. Students are valued for their individuality as they are taught to face the future and contribute to society with compassion, courage, knowledge and vision.

Books for Bingo!
PTO sponsored Books for Bingo was a great night for our families. Students and their families had fun together as they waited for their numbers to be called. Books were plentiful for all children. The evening culminated with the raffle prizes; most notably the ride to school with the Stoughton Police and Fire Departments.

Spring is Here! Baseball is Back!
Opening day of major league baseball is surely a sign that Spring is finally here. The West School Community celebrated with a Baseball Spirit Day on April 4th. Staff and students wore their favorite baseball apparel.
We started the day with "Baseball" music playing throughout the building. It was a fun day for all!

Community Reader Day
Community Reader Day took place on May 7th. It was a special opportunity for members of
the Stoughton Community to join the students of the West Elementary School in
celebrating the enjoyment of reading and promoting awareness of the importance
of reading in everyone’s lives!
The twenty community readers read Each Kindness by Jacqueline Woodson to one classroom. Following the reading, they shared the importance of kindness in their daily lives/jobs.
| Mr. McNamara, Stoughton Fire Department |
| Mr. Pazyra, Veterans Affairs |
Many activities took place following the Community Reading Day in support of the continued message of "Kindness".
All students completed a bulletin board, under the direction of Ms. Murphy, Art teacher, that shows their understandings from the story. They wrote a kind act on a stone to be “thrown into the pond.”

Grade 1 and 5 celebrate Dr. Seuss Day!
We all remember the story, Green Eggs and Ham, and the
author who wrote it. To celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday, students from grades 1
and 5 from the West Elementary School joined together to share in reading his
books to each other. Fifth graders were
able to step back in time and remember the excitement that came with learning
to read and the first graders were able to demonstrate their own reading
skills. Ms. Banis

Valentine's Day Poems for Marines:
After sending greetings to Captain Naughton and the Marines in Afghanistan, Grade 2 students from Room 11 were so excited to receive a letter in return! The marines were especially thankful
for our words of encouragement. Thank you to room 11 for reminding the marines
that they work together as a team, just like room 11!!!
The second graders in room 11 have written acrostic poems to
send to the marines for Valentine's day! The students wrote about kindness,
friendship, working together, staying healthy, and being safe. In addition, the
students wrote letters to accompany their poems, and decorated the cards with
illustrations and stickers!
